Thank God They're Not Clogs

Ever since Karl Lagerfeld sent clogs onto the S/S Chanel runway the clumpy little wooden shoes have been unavoidable. Personally I don't dislike them on others - I've seen some women dressed brilliantly in clogs - but I don't want to wear a pair myself. Thankfully three of Hollywood's best dressed ladies have developed shoe obsessions of their own, giving us lots of alternative styles to swoon over...


Sarah Jessica Parker and the Extreme Heel: SJP took these gorgeous Kirkwood heels everywhere with her as she promoted SATC2. Though they make enough of a statement on their own Sarah bravely paired them with animal prints and a look from the Proenza Schouler Fall collection.

Rachel Bilson and the Nude Wedge: Even those with little interest in fashion know that nude is a huge colour trend right now, and Rachel gets in on the look with these Rag & Bone 'Victoria' wedges. They stand out beautifully against Rachel's black tights but I think they'd look just as good with bare legs.

Diane Kruger and the Investment Shoe: I don't know a single woman who doesn't adore Lanvin, so any piece from the collection is a great investment. Diane clearly loves her 'Sunbeam' heels, as she not only has the snakeskin pair but also invested in the black pair, which she wore to the National Movie Awards. The chain detail is very chic.

The 2010 CFDA Fashion Awards

The CFDA Awards took place in New York last night, which I had been looking forward too since the Met Gala. Sarah Jessica Parker promised she'd wear a McQueen dress to the awards, and she stuck to her word. I absolutely love this dress and I think it's a great choice for SJP, but I she could have dressed it up more. The pile of fabric on the floor and her rather uninspiring hairstyle brings the look down a notch.


Gwyneth Paltrow is the opposite of SJP. The dress isn't really newsworthy on its own, but with Gwyneth's super-toned-body and her slinky up-do it looks stunning. A great example of how to work a black dress. Gwyneth really works the Michael Kors All-American vibe, don't you think? It would be great to see her wearing Kors more often, and maybe even some Calvin Klein.


And as for the models, Daisy Lowe continues to look great in anything and everything, and Jessica Stam went for the sheer black maxi dress. I love her necklace, it's a great touch.

Sex and the City Hits London

The Sex and the City cast worked the red carpet in London last night for the UK premiere of Sex and the City 2. Sarah Jessica Parker looked wonderfully over-the-top in an Alexander McQueen dress and a Philip Treacy hat. This is the exact combination she wore to the London premiere back in 2008. She got quite a lot of stick back then for her OTT headwear (I remember David Letterman making fun of it on The Late Show) but I find it rather flattering that she always saves her kookiest premiere outfit for London.



At the NYC premiere it was Kristen Davis who stole the show, especially in her vintage Balmain dress, but I wasn’t as keen on her London look. Although I do like that she has stuck with vintage dresses throughout the promotional tour.
Cynthia Nixton chose a lovely shade of blue for the red carpet (her dress was by Narcisco Rodriguez) but it wasn’t much to get excited over. Especially next to SJP’s beautiful McQueen dress.


Kim Cattrall also went for a simple design, choosing a strapless black gown by Thierry Mugler, but she looked amazingly hot. Much better than her NYC look. She was really working the red carpet last night, Samantha Jones style...

The Sex and the City After Party

I wasn't overly keen on any of the looks the SATC ladies wore to last nights NYC premiere, but the after party brought out some interesting dresses. Kristen Davis, who I think was the best dressed at the actual premiere, changed into a a vintage Balmain dress and Sarah Jessica Parker slipped into a lace Elie Saab number.



I feel like SJP could definitely have pulled off a shorter hemline, this dress looks a little too long, but the Nicholas Kirkwood's were a great choice of shoe. They seem to be her favourite pair at the moment - she was spotted wearing them last week too.
And Kristen simply looked beautiful in her sequined Balmain dress. This is the second time Kristen's worn a vintage Balmain piece to an event this month (see her first dress HERE) and I'm becoming very envious of her vintage collection. I can't wait to see what Kristen will wear to the London premiere, she's on a roll at the moment.

Hit and Miss of the Week: The Lovely Michelle Williams

Last week at The Cannes Film Festival there was a lot of Eva Longoria Parker. This week there was a lot of Michelle Williams. And I can say without a doubt that I preferred Michelle's week.
Not only has Michelle been rocking her new hairstyle (which I love, by the way) she's also been getting her legs out at every occasion, slipping into a great selection of mini dresses.
And speaking of mini dresses, check out Sarah Jessica Parker in Proenza Schouler and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld wearing Emilio de la Morena. Both ladies look fabulous, topping off a great week in celebrity fashion.

Hit and Miss of the Week: Final Met Gala Roundup

I'm really sorry if you've had enough of the Met Gala this week. I just didn't have enough time to say everything I wanted to earlier in the week, so I thought I'd dedicate the Hit & Miss post to the event.
Overall I thought it was a good Met Gala turnout (there were hardly any wardrobe slip-ups), but there was a definite lack of really breathtaking gowns on the red carpet. Yes, everyone looked great, but the majority didn't go all out for the event, which was a real shame. That's why we're lucky to have Coco Rocha in the world. She really went for it, and looked absolutely stunning in Zac Posen.

Balmain Dress + Magazine Cover = Smart Move

Sarah Jessica Parker is on another magazine cover. This time it's Marie Claire. She's of course promoting the new Sex and the City film. Marie Claire seems to have interviewed all four women, but SJP is naturally on the cover. I guess her face sells more issues. It would be nice to see Kim, Cynthia or Kristen on a cover for a change, as I love all the SATC ladies, but I'm not really complaining, because SJP looks amazing dressed in Balmain on the cover.
The massive hype that has surrounded Balmain for so long (and the fact people still pronounce it wrong) has slightly put me off the label recently, but Balmain dresses look great on magazine covers. Remember Demi Moore for W?


I'm not going to do the 'who looked better?' thing because quite frankly they both look amazing - photoshopping or no photoshopping.
And on a slightly unrelated note I just started reading The Carrie Diaries. It's a really easy read and is pretty entertaining. Is anyone else reading it at the moment? What do you think?

Sarah Jessica Parker Works It



This is a lesson in cool. Casually roll up a pair of old denims, wear with the ankle boots you bought last season and any old tank top you can find. Wrap a Vuitton scarf around your neck, and top it off with a hat Johnny Depp would be proud of. This is how SJP does casual cool. I like it.
You'll also note the Halston Heritage Slouchy ultrasuede Sac Bag she's carrying. It's growing on me big time. And it's a rather cheap (for a designer handbag, that is) £350, which is even better.

Which is SJP's Best US Vogue Cover
I've been patiently waiting to do this post since the preview image of Sarah Jessica Parker's US Vogue cover hit The Fashion Spot about a week ago. There still isn't an HQ image, so I'm afraid we're stuck with the tagged one [left].
It's the May issue, and SJP is obviously promoting the May 27th release of Sex and the City 2. I like the look of the issue, and Sarah's smiley picture, shot by Mario Testino, is very refreshing.

This is Sarah's 5th US Vogue cover. Her first was at the start of 2002, where she was introduced as 'The Star Next Door'. Within a year she was discussing 'movies' and 'motherhood', and by her 2005 cover SATC had finished....
...Only to be quickly brought back to life in 2008, when Vogue felt talking 'about sex' was just as important as the killer question: 'How Clean is Your Water?'
Now she's back again, not just as a 'Fashion Superstar' but a 'Modern Mom' too. I love looking at old magazine covers - you can tell so much about the time just from the cover lines.



The all important question, though, is which is your favourite SJP cover? Do you like vintage SJP, all wavy hair and big grin, or are you more a fan of sultry SJP, posing in-between Mr Big's legs?

Hit and Miss of the Week: Mischa in Gold, Not Yellow

At the beginning of the week Mischa Barton was photographed in ugliest yellow high-waisted jeans (click HERE if you missed it). It felt far too cruel to post about them, and by the end of the week she was dressing a lot better. Although the Mischa-magic from the OC days is still missing; I don't know about you, but I no longer look at Mischa for style inspiration.
Mischa may have lost her style icon crown, but SJP has been comfortably wearing hers for years. This week she was snapped in a range of outfits.
I adore the Alexander McQueen tank top she wore on the school-run, and her draped white dress was very Carrie. The only accessory SJP was sporting that we haven't seen Carrie carry (sorry for the bad joke) is a baby carrier. But I'm sure by Sex and the City 3/4/5/100,000 we'll see Carrie with a baby. And I love the baby bonnet. So sweet. I wonder if that's Marion or Tabitha.

SJP: Two Dresses, One Day

Yesterday Sarah Jessica Parker was busy promoting SATC2, with Cynthia and Kristen, out in Las Vegas. Getting into the Carrie Bradshaw mindset she wore not one, but two fabulous frocks on the red carpet. Starting with a yellow Lanvin mini and then moving onto a black Marchesa number.



I'm not looking froward to the second movie at all, but I am excited to see what the four ladies wear as they're promoting the sequel. You can always count on SJP to rock a pretty dress.

Hit and Miss of the Week: What Happened to Whitney?

This week hasn't been the most fabulous when it comes to celebrity style. Let's hope it's just because they're recovering from the Oscars and all those fashion week front rows.
Sarah Jessica Parker did make a blue carpet appearance, however, and looked lovely. Whilst Kristen Stewart (a smiling Kristen Stewart, I must add) and Dakota Fanning hit the red carpet for their movie premiere. I'm not loving Dakota's Valentino though...
And Whitney Port was also photographed a lot this week. I really have no idea what is going on with her style. She was amazing in The Hills and ever since she left it's gone down hill. Perhaps she had stylist hiding in the Teen Vogue cupboard with her all those years?

The Oscars 2010

The red carpet at the Oscars last was definitely an interesting one. There were lots of dresses that I really didn't like, and a lot that blended into the background. But there were some red carpet moments that were so beautiful (Zoe Saldana, Cameron Diaz and Amanda Seyfried) that I didn't mind the average looks. Because it just made the Zoe's, Cameron's, and Amanda's of the world stand out even more.

In January I wrote that this dress was perfect for the Oscars. Diane Kruger was my first choice but I also suggested Zoe, and as fate would have it... This is easily my favourite look of the night. She looks stunning.

I think Amanda looks fantastic in this dress, her best red carpet moment to date. But she wasn't actually up for an award, and this is perhaps a little bit to OTT, therefore. Either way she wore it perfectly, and it's sure to be in every best dressed list.

I don't think Diane was at her absolute red carpet best last night (when she really brings it you don't even notice anyone else) but again, it's a faultless look. And Cameron Diaz is up there with Zoe when it comes to my favourite dresses of the night. The Oscar de la Renta dress looked like it was made for her, and it was a lovely surprise too - I don't normally put Cameron down as a full-skirt kinda girl.

I'm very disappointed that Carey went for a black dress, I wanted to see her in colour. But she did look very sweet, so I'll let her off. Kristen made up for the dodgy trousers of last week in this dramatic number. That fact that it's a little gothic anyway makes her moody face less obvious.

Everyone loves Meryl, and it was nice to see a sleeve on the red carpet last night. Nice zebra-print bangle too. And I have a feeling some people will hate Maggie's printed dress, it isn't exactly your regular Oscar dress. But I love the fact she's always willing to experiment.

I wasn't so keen on Demi in Versace at first, but it is starting to grow on me. And I also disliked SJP in Chanel, but I now totally adore it. It works better with her personality than the Versace does with Demi's.

And you've probably noticed that Sandra Bullock is not in the post. I'm so so so happy she won (not that I've seen the film) the award, but I wasn't into her dress at all. She looked much better at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards I think. I was also confused by Jennifer Lopez, Penelope Cruz and Tina Fey. And I'm going up and down on Charlize Theron's Dior dress - I admire her for wearing it but I just don't think I like it.
Scarily I also thought Miley Cyrus looked good, but I could not bring myself to include her in the annual Oscar post...

The SJP Puzzle

You know I adore SJP, and you know I spent most of 2009 in a bad mood with her over the dreaded SATC sequel. It's so hard to find fault with SJP because she's such a sweetie (have you watched her on Letterman? You just want to be her BFF) but she just keeps doing things to annoy me.
This time it doesn't involve Sex and the City, it's about one of my favourite labels: Halston. If I could live in any decade for the fashion it would be the 1970's, because I absolutely adore Halston's work. His clothes had a simplicity to them that made them so glamorous. It's really tricky to find good images of his designs online but there is a great book (HERE) filled with fabulous images.


You've probably all heard by now that Sarah Jessica Parker [in Halston above] has signed up to work for Halston Heritige - not to be confused with the mainline Halston, which has cleverly appointed Marios Schwab as creative director.
I was already getting sick of celebrities designing highstreet collections, but why are they now worming their way into high fashion? Granted SJP has amazing style, and it will not be a case of Lindsay Lohan at Emanuel Ungaro. But whatever happened to real designers?


Just so we can remember what the label is really about here is a slideshow (not made by me) of great Halston moments. Oh, what I'd give for a piece of vintage Haltson...
