Hit and Miss of the Week: From Hollywood to London

This week two Hollywood A-listers made their way over to London. First there was Jennifer Aniston, who had a date at Harrods to promote her new fragrance. Despite the predictable nature of her look it wasn’t yet another black dress, and I thought Jen looked fabulous. She should ditch black forever.
Fellow LA resident, Cameron Diaz, was also in town, promoting Knight and Day with Tom Cruise. While I like the fact she chose a British designer for the premiere I was disappointed that her dress was so casual. I felt she could have brought more Hollywood glamour with her. And back in LA Vanessa Hudgens wasn’t having much luck on the red carpet either, as she has fallen into a bit of a style-rut. She needs an Alba-style makeover, I think.

Jennifer Aniston: Hit

Jennifer Aniston was in London this week promoting her new fragrance at Harrods. I like the choice of nude Valentino dress. I would have liked to see some colour (both Jen and Angelina religiously stick to black and nude – Brad clearly has a type) but I prefer Jen in nude than black, so I’m not really complaining. The choice of tan heels is also great, as they lengthen her already amazing legs. It would have been nice to see something more inspiring going on with her hair – but this is Jennifer Aniston, and predictable style is her game.

Cameron Diaz: Miss

I normally love everything Cameron Diaz wears on the red carpet but was deeply disappointed to see her in this Stella McCartney sweater dress at the UK Knight and Day premiere. This is not an exciting look – I could put my hair in a ponytail and throw on a jumper dress and a pair of black heels any day. London needed a bit of Hollywood magic and Cameron failed to bring it. I would have liked this look for a TV appearance (because it is a great dress) but at premiere I expect a little more drama.


Christina Hendricks: Hit

I’m still working my way though season one of Mad Men which is quite shameful as I normally get though a box-set at warp speed. Christina Hendricks is great style inspiration on screen, and her look at the Mad Men season four premiere showed she’s equally as fashionable off screen. The long-sleeved lace dress is perhaps a little too A/W for a July premiere, but she pulled it off. I even quite like the high neckline, which is unlike me.

Vanessa Hudgens: So-So

I was a little bit disappointed to see Vanessa’s outfit for her boyfriend Zac Efron’s movie premiere this week. I know there is nothing wrong with this look – the mini is a good shape for her and she’s accessorised well – but it’s just boring. It sounds like I’m being cruel but it’s only because Vanessa Hudgens could be so much more fashionable if she pushed the boat out a little. At the moment I feel like she’s in the place Jessica Alba was last year; wearing perfectly nice clothes, but nothing anyone will ever remember. What she needs is an Antonio Berardi moment…

Jada Pinkett Smith: Miss

I love Jada Pinkett Smith, and the whole Smith family if I’m honest. What I’m not loving, however, is this pink t-shirt dress. Granted this premiere wasn’t for her own movie, but her son’s, so I can understand why she kept it low-key. The problem I have with this dress, though, is that it’s too short (despite Jada’s amazing legs), is ill-fitting and the colour is too teen-y. I won’t hold it against Jada though, as she looks completely fantastic on every other occasion. This is just a blip.

Kylie Minogue: Miss

Long-time readers of the blog will know that my fashion pet hates are white heels, blue eye-shadow and dresses with one sleeve. I love Kylie but this look was never going to work for me because of the miss-matching sleeves. Beyond that it is also a little dull – how many body-con LBD’s have we seen these last few years? Her boots definitely earn her some points, but sadly not enough to give this look a hit. Sorry Kylie!

Hit and Miss of the Week: Kristen's Hit

The day has finally come - I've given Kristen Stewart a hit. And it's well deserved. A few weeks ago you all agreed that the shirt/skirt combo was a great look for Kristen, and she gave it an update this week at an event.
Daphne Guinness, Natasha Poly and Rachel Bilson also looked great this week - although when does Rachel Bilson ever look bad? - but Katherine Heigl and Vanessa Hudgens both slipped up.
I think Vanessa's style is on its way to being great, but she made the mistake of adding way too much to one look, this week. It's a shame because she was on a roll.

Red Carpet Favourite: The Sheer Black Maxi Dress

Last night there were two very fashionable events taking place. Riccardo Tisci hosted a Givenchy party in New York to celebrate the closing night of of Maria Abramovic’s “The Artist Is Present” exhibition. Guests included Christina Ricci, Courtney Love, Natasha Poly and Liv Tyler. For me Natasha was the best dressed (more on that in the Hit & Miss this weekend) but Liv was a very close second in her sheer Givenchy dress.
At the same time, in California, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Emily Blunt all supported the 2010 Crystal + Lucy Awards dressed in, you guessed it... black!
Vanessa Hudgens also made an appearance at the Crystal + Lucy Awards, but stood out from the other LBD-clad-ladies as her skirt was sheer.
Notice a pattern yet? The black maxi dress with a sheer skirt is the look for red carpet events at the moment. Everyone is doing it.



You'll remember Kate Beckinsale's sheer Chanel dress, which she wore in Cannes, and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld looked gorgeous in a similar Mark Fast design a few weeks ago. Margherita Missoni has also given the style a go, and Ashley Olsen put a spin on the look with a black lace skirt.
It's clearly no longer enough to bare your pins on the red carpet (far too obvious, no?) so those who really want to make a statement must simply give a glimpse of leg.
I can't believe Jennifer Aniston hasn't caught onto this look yet. You know she loves a black dress, and I think this style would look stunning on her. Hopefully Vanessa Hudgens gave her a few ideas last night...

Hit and Miss of the Week: To Cannes and Back

As you know The Cannes Film Festival kicked off this week. So far the highlights have been all the Gucci Première dresses on the red carpet, Carey Mulligan's Prada sundress and Cate Blanchett in that McQueen. Cate so far has the Cannes red carpet crown.
Also taking place this week was the Chanel 2010/11 Cruise collection, which Diane Kruger of course attended - you know she loves her Chanel. Whilst over in LA Vanessa Hudgens and Whitney Port experimented with bright shades of purple and yellow. Whitney was a lot more successful than Vanessa, however.
And back in Cannes Eva Longoria Parker floated about in a very slinky selection of minis. I haven't liked her Cannes look at all this year. Does one really need to go shopping in a body-con mini? I mean, really?

Hit and Miss of the Week: Kirsten's Fab in Nina Ricci

It's been a very good week for red carpet appearances, with lots of stylish celebrities slipping into red carpet numbers. Kirsten Dunst looked beautiful in a Nina Ricci dress (I wish Kirsten was photographed more often) and Olivia Palermo looked fantastic in asymmetric feather embellished frock.
Unfortunately two of my favourites slipped up this week. Kate Hudson attended a few events, and sadly none of her outfits did it for me. But I'm sure she'll be back on top form next week. And Natalie Portman chose a Lanvin number for the New York City Ballet's Annual Spring Galathe. It's a stunning dress but I think her accessories let it down. A real shame.

Vanessa Hudgens and the Floppy Hat

I wouldn't exactly say I follow Vanessa Hudgens' style religiously, but recently I have been paying a lot more attention to what she's wearing. She's not a Nicole Richie or anything, but Vanessa does have that LA look going on, and she wears it well.



She was spotted at Coachella with Zac Efron yesterday, wearing a cute floppy hat. It's the best Coachella accessory (apart from the fab Alexander Wang shades, of course) so far, and it's not the first time she's been pictured wearing it. In fact, she's seen with her floppy hat far more than she is with Efron.


I now have hat envy, and want a similar style badly. So far ASOS has the widest selection, with the two styles below being the best. I'm sure I've seen hats almost identical to Vanessa's in H&M before though, so I might pay them a visit.

Hit and Miss of the Week: I Love You VB

This week was a lot better than the last, and I only had to use a 'miss' twice. My favourite look of the week has to be Victoria Beckham's airport outfit. There was no flying cap, but she did show off some fabulous trousers. This look was then done again, a few days later, by Cheryl Cole. Her version has nothing on VB's, however.
And also this week, Kristen Stewart was spotted in her own clothes, and she looks so much better than she does on the red carpet. The issue with her must be comfort, so she really needs to find a red carpet style that she's happy with. Lets hope she finds it soon...

Hit and Miss of the Week: Miss, Miss, Yawn...

This hasn't been a very good week. It's mostly my fault, as I posted all the best looks (like Jennifer in Donna Karan and SJP in Marchesa) during the week. So the Hit & Miss is basically put together with the week's leftovers, These include Katherine Heigl in a very princess-y dress, Heidi Montag carrying a Hermes bag (yes, I know, life's unfair) and Madonna in very tight thigh-high boots. It's not an inspiring selection. I just hope you've all had a more stylish week...

Give a Jumpsuit a Home

Despite the jumpsuit being in fashion a few seasons now I have avoided it. If I lived in LA, sure, I'd get one. But I've always felt I'd look like an idiot wearing a jumpsuit around London.
It seems I'm not the only one staying away - there is a whole section of jumpsuits in the My-Wardrobe sale (most up to 75% off), which you can check out HERE.
The last person in the world I expected to make me give jumpsuits a second thought was Vanessa Hudgens. Just yesterday me and a friend were discussing (over cake) how dull her style is. It seems she got the message, because look what she wore later that day:




I'm going to be honest, at first I thought it was a maxi dress, and I did prefer it like that, but she still rocks that jumpsuit. Go Vanessa!

Lets Set Them Up

Last week we were all impressed to see Jessica Alba wearing an Antonio Berardi dress to the People’s Choice Awards. For me I wasn’t just happy to see her looking so stylish, but was also excited to see her in a label that’s not a household name. While I have doubts it was actually Jessica who selected the British born designer, it’s always nice to see celebrities venturing out from the usual Versace/Marchesa/Armani red carpet dresses to something a little more surprising.
Obviously there’s nothing wrong with the big fashion labels, they produce stunning collections, but celebrities always go up in my opinion when they wear clothing from smaller labels too. It shows they have some fashion know-how.
So I’ve tracked down some gorgeous dresses by younger talent from the S/S 10 collections, and selected the celebrities who should give them a whirl at their next red carpet event.


Vanessa Hudgens always looks really pretty, but pretty is sometimes boring. It would be nice to see her in something more graphic, and I think she’d look great in this orange Holly Fulton dress.


Who isn’t a fan of Rachel Bilson’s style? I’d love love love to see her wear a Peter Pilotto dress this year. Peter Pilotto has easily become one of my favourite labels recently.


Dakota Fanning’s fashion-following is growing by the week. And I’d love to see her wear this Olivia Rubin mini to a red carpet event this year. Think slightly messy hair and a statement shoe, and it's perfect.


I’m not sure if it would work out as well as I imagine it in my head, but I wish Lady Gaga would experiment with the romantic look in an Erdem dress. I think she’d look amazing.
