Hit and Miss of the Week: Good and Bad

There was no in-between this week, celebrities either got it right or wrong when it came to their wardrobe choices. Hitting a bad note was Eva Mendes, who had a rare slip-up in a tricky Oscar de la Renta dress.
Stephanie Pratt and Taylor Momsen also made wardrobe mistakes, with the former baring a little too much on the red carpet. But Lea Michele was on top form, rocking a gorgeous Giambattista Valli dress, and Coco’s Tea Party favorites Leighton and Nicole were papped in two adorable (and very wearable) outfits.

Leighton Meester: Hit

As you can tell I’m so into Leighton Meester’s off-set look at the moment. This week she was photographed leaving her Gossip Girl trailer wearing a luxe grey t-shirt and gorgeous blue shorts. Her Celine handbag is still constantly by her side and she also appears to be a bit of a Mulberry fan; wearing the navy moccasin boots that Olivia Palermo also owns. Leighton is currently unbeatable in the style stakes, now we just need her to hit the red carpet some more.

Stephanie Pratt: Miss

When Stephanie Pratt first joined the cast of The Hills I hated her. But then we were supposed too, weren’t we? The more I watched the more I liked her, and she ended up being one of my favourite Hills girls at the end of the show. Despite changing my opinion of her personality Steph still lacks a killer wardrobe. This dress could have worked (or at least made it as a so-so) if there wasn’t sheer fabric across the belly. I don’t care if she has a perfectly flat stomach; just put it away when you’re on the red carpet. It isn’t chic to show off your belly button in a dress – I’m sure Coco Chanel lived by that rule…



Taylor Momsen: Miss

I have to be careful when writing about Taylor Momsen because I don’t want to be horrible – after all, she’s only 16 – but she makes it very easy to dislike her. As you probably know, Taylor is the face of Madonna’s line Material Girl, and was in New York this week to make a promotional appearance for the label. I absolutely hate the styling of this look, but broken down I think the lace bra-top and leather jacket could be cute pieces. It would have looked a lot better anyway if Taylor’s hair wasn’t so disgustingly long. And what’s with the John Lennon shades? They make Taylor look try-hard.

Lea Michele: Hit

Last week I gave Lea a so-so rating and hoped that she’d soon be onto a hit. And she didn’t make me wait long as she slipped into this Giambattista Valli dress for a Fox event. I love the shape of the dress on her, and the colours are flattering against her tanned skin too. A gorgeous ring or embellished cuff could have been a nice addition but the look is fine as it is. I love the natural hair and makeup too. Well done Lea!

Eva Mendes: Miss

I normally love Eva Mendes’ red carpet appearances, and although I wanted to like this grey Oscar de la Renta dress I just can’t. The strange hip-detailing isn’t for me anyway, but it looked a lot less clumsy when it was shown on the runway. It’s a brave choice for a New York premiere and Eva deserves credit for giving it a whirl but she simply gets lost in all the fabric. She’ll be back on top at her next appearance though, I’m sure.

Nicole Richie: Hit

Nicole has been chilling out at home in LA this week and was spotted going for a walk with Joel. I always love Nicole’s summer style and although the outfit itself is pretty simple the styling is perfect. Her braided hair is really cute (seems she’s moved on from the Wang plait) and the across-the-body embellished bag is gorgeous. Nicole’s Winter Kate a/w collection has started to hit stores (it’s stocked at my-wardrobe and ASOS) and it’s looking strong. It would be nice to see her wearing some pieces from her own collection, so hopefully within the next few weeks she’ll start showing them off.

Lusting After Nicole's Jacket

For a few weeks now I have been on the lookout for a silver sequined jacket. I desperately want one but have two concerns; the first is I can't actually find one I like, and the other is that I'm worried I might look like a magician.
Last night Nicole Richie (along with Christina Aguilera, who knew they were friends?) hit up Voyeur in LA wearing a lovely sequined blazer. It's nice to see pictures of Nicole again - it feels like she's been hiding out recently.

This is exactly what I'm looking for in a sequined jacket: fab shape, great sequins and not at all magician-y. It also looks amazing with the snakeskin clutch, no? Nicole is always spot on with her accessories. If anyone knows where I can find a similar jacket (preferably around the £100 mark) please let me know. I want one even more now Nicole's rocked the look!

Nicole Richie and the Alexander Wang Plait

I know I keep going on and on about the plaits in the Alexander Wang S/S 2010 collection, but I really love this hairstyle. Last September, when the collection was first shown, I had just gone for the Ashley Olsen bob and I've been trying to grow my hair into a plait-friendly-length ever since.
I'm still a few inches short, and have resigned myself to the fact that when my hair is eventually long enough this style will be so over. So I'll just have to admire Nicole Richie, who wore the S/S plait at a Hollywood event last night.

Nicole gave the plait and LA twist, wearing an oversized white shirt, a scarf tied as a belt and a long gold necklace. It's like the "Zoebot" days never ended, isn't it?
Even though I love the way Nicole has worn the Alexander Wang style braid I still think the sporty runway styling is unbeatable. Anyone working the sport luxe look on this sunny day should definitely think about plaiting their hair. It should hopefully keep you cool too.

Hit and Miss of the Week: Casual Cool

My focus was on the streets of LA and airport entrances this week, as it was all about the casual look. Nicole Richie always looks fantastic in a pair of jeans, and this week she dressed up her simple outfit will a gorgeous scarf. Also looking good was Reese Witherspoon, who has been working the S/S 2010 trends in the most natural of ways.
And though Victoria Beckham doesn't exactly do casual, she was spotted at an airport earlier in the week in that Miu Miu dress. I'd love to see her in some of the A/W pieces now.

Hit and Miss of the Week: Jennifer Aniston's Week of Promo

Earlier in the week I wrote that I often think Jennifer Aniston is overexposed. And this week is no different. She's still promoting The Bounty Hunter and made five red carpet appearances this week. I love Lacriox but Jennifer did not look good in his pink strapless dress. I think her best look of the week was a simple white shift dress.
And though Jennifer's wardrobe was a little hit and miss this week, Whitney Port seems to be back on top. She's had a few wardrobe slip-ups over the last couple of months, but it looks like she's turning that around.

Nicole and Harlow Have Runway Hair

Yesterday Nicole Richie was photographed taking Harlow to ballet class in LA. I very rarely write about Harlow, but I think she's the cutest celebrity baby ever. Yes, Suri wears heels and is unbelievably fashionable for a three-year-old (check out this hilarious Suri blog for a laugh), but Harlow has charisma. She also has a wicked name.
And I'm a fan of any baby that works Chanel Couture inspired hair to her ballet class, as Harlow did yesterday. So she is, understandably, the coolest celeb baby around.


Nicole also worked some runway inspired hair, with an Alexander Wang style plait. Ever since his S/S 10 collection showed last September I've been growing my hair, hoping it will be long enough for this style. It's still not. And I'm sure by the time it is long enough this look will be so overdone I won't want to wear it anyway. Fashion is unfair.

The New Boho

Cast your mind back a few years, to the boho era of Sienna, Mischa and Lindsay. It was all about gypsy skirts, cowboy boots, low-slung belts and the Chloe Paddington.
Sienna has left her boho days behind her, but the look has returned for summer - just like it does every year.
This updated version of boho focuses on print. Louis Vuitton's S/S 2010 collection [left] was a mass jumble of tribal prints, in zesty limes, bright blues and sugary pinks. Zoe Saldana has already worn a dress from the Vuitton collection, selecting a classic black blazer as her only accessory.
And whilst Sienna was the boho poster-girl last time around, it's Nicole Richie who's leading the pack for 2010. She's been wearing lots of 60's and 70's inspired prints lately, especially in warm tones of orange, red and brown. And this look runs throughout her House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate collections, which are great labels for boho basics.

Hit and Miss of the Week: On a Saturday

Don't worry, you haven't somehow skipped a whole day, it really is Saturday, I'm just posting the Hit & Miss a day early this week because of LFW. Instead of the Hit & Miss expect some show updates tomorrow.
But on to what everyone has been wearing this week: two of the stylish Kate's (Moss and Bosworth) both put together top looks this week. While Mossy went cool Bosworth went sophisticated. It's hard to choose a favourite. Also doing the rounds this week were Nicole Richie (who was promoting her Winter Kate line), Maggie Gyllenhaal (promoting granny-chic) and Molly Sims. Oh, and Lady Gaga wore a poodle on her head. Can't forget that!

What Type of Bride Will Nicole be?

I've been a fan of Nicole Richie for a very long time. Throughout the anorexia rumours, the 'zoebot' days, the DUI and the 84 minutes in prison. It was the adorable bob haircut that first made me love her, and now I'm an even bigger fan, because she has turned her life around so gracefully. I feel like there's a lot of affection for Nicole out there (whenever I write about her the comments roll in) because of her reinvention, sense of humour and fabulous style.


So it's no surprise that when she popped into Monique Lhuillier yesterday I got excited. She has always said a wedding to Joel Madden is on the cards, so could 2010be the year? Granted, the fact she went into Monique Lhuillier means little (she doesn't just do wedding dresses) but how exciting would it be if she is getting married?
Nicole is super-stylish so her wedding dress would be absolutely amazing. I could imagine her going for something quite bohemian and ethereal - perhaps even a vintage Halston - but as she favours this style for the red carpet maybe she'd go for something more bride-y?



I can't really picture Nicole in any of the dresses above, but I can't wait to see what she does choose to walk down the aisle in. Whether it's this year, next year or way way in the future.

Hit and Miss of the Week: Pretty in Pink

This week my favourite look belonged to Kate Bosworth. She took to the red carpet in a pale pink Calvin Klein, and I adore the result, she looked absolutely stunning. Also dressing up this week were Taylor Swift (who is slowly finding her style) and Dita Von Teese, who was in Paris for the couture collections.
And over in LA the pavements were just as styled as the runways in Paris - both Nicole Richie and Kirsten Dunst were snapped out and about in cute outfits. As always, let me know which look you rate in the comments section.

Hit and Miss of the Week: When it Rains

It's rather bad that I feel this smug, but you would not believe how happy I was to see that it rained in LA this week. It's only because I am constantly seeing pictures of actresses walking around in tank tops and flip flops while in the UK we're still pulling on the UGG boots. But, obviously, the rain did not stop the women of LA dressing up. Out came the Jimmy Choo for Hunter wellies, and everyone was wearing a hat.
And over in London the story that dominated the week was the 'is Kate engaged or not?' drama. Which meant she was papped a lot this week. She's looking stylish as ever, of course. Let me know who you rate this week in the comments as always.

Hit and Miss of the Week: The Year of Nicole Richie?

It's 2010, and some celebrities are off to a great style-start. Leighton Meester looked amazing in a Christopher Kane mini earlier in the week, she should wear Kane more often. Then there is Nicole Richie, who everyone loves but who has also been rather absent from the blogs the past year. She's off to a great start, three hit looks in one week, so don't be surprised if she's the celebrity to copy this year.
Then there is the not so great. Jennifer Lopez appears to be stuck in the last decade. What happened J-Lo?
